The 16th annual Rossgarth tournament was held on 18th & 19th June 2016 and proved to be as popular and as successful as ever! A lot of hard work went into achieving success this year to maintain the standards set in the previous years and continue to grow the tournament.

The number of teams entered this year was similar to last year and in total we saw 157 teams from several counties, playing the pitches of Potterne Park, which is an extremely healthy number by anyone’s standards. We even had a team travelling from London again, and also welcomed a team from Verwood Girls FC in the U14’s tournament.

Most age groups sold out well in advance and a huge number of teams requested entry after the cut-off date. If we had more time and space we could have increased the size of some of the leagues. The waiting list for spaces in all age groups was huge, and a few teams dropped out before the tournament day, but these spaces were very quickly filled.

We were lucky enough to welcome back AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust with their Powerstrike machine, giving players the opportunity to measure the speed of their shot, but this year we decided that this would be completely free of charge. This was a popular part the tournament and we thank AFC Bournemouth for agreeing to come along.

On the Saturday we were also lucky enough to welcome Robbie Yates, Paul Spillane and Gareth Stewart from Between the Sticks Goalkeeper coaching, who were offering taster sessions to all potential goalkeepers for the bargain price of 50p! This was extremely popular and they had queues of people waiting for their fantastic coaching.

Robbie then very kindly donated back the money raised to the club, and also donated a Southampton FC Goalkeepers shirt for a future raffle. Huge respect to Robbie and his team for all they did and for their very kind donations!

We were also lucky to have ANS Photography on site on both days taking pictures of the teams while they were playing and selling these at a very reasonable price on site. If you missed them, don’t worry you can visit their website to view and order the photos online.

The weather over both days was great, sun shining on occasions, not too hot, with the exception for Sunday afternoon where we saw a bit of rain and the brollies came out, but this didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and the football continued to be as good as ever.

Saturday morning was the busiest session of the weekend with 46 teams enjoying the Festival of Football, meaning over 4350 players attending the morning session. The car park was full and the burgers were flying from the stalls! I hope all the teams enjoyed their football and continue to come back to the tournament well into their competitive years!

I had the absolute pleasure of being able to walk around the pitches on both days talking the managers, spectators and some players. I have to say some of the football was a fantastic to watch and all the teams played in the spirit of the tournament, with the refs rarely needing to break into a sweat to keep things flowing nicely. Thanks again to all the lads who volunteered for referee duty especially the younger lads that were refereeing for the first time. Great job everyone and special thanks to Richard Buckley for co-ordinating all the referees.

The finals of the competitive leagues were once again superb and exciting throughout the age groups, and a special mention has to go to our Rossgarth U13’s BYFL teams who ended up having a Rossgarth v’s Rossgarth semi-final! What a great achievement to have both your teams in the semi-finals!!

Congratulations to Karole Clifton, who attended the tournament with her daughter who plays for Verwood Girls FC. Karole was the lucky winner of the signed AFC Bournemouth shirt that we raffled over the tournament weekend!

As Tournament Director I would like to thank all the volunteers that made it possible for us to stage such a busy and successful event. I’d also like to say a big thank you to all our sponsors, particularly our main sponsors Dorset Windows. Without our sponsors and volunteers the event just simply couldn’t be held and wouldn’t be the huge success that it was.

Thanks again for coming along and making the weekend a great success. We look forward to seeing you in June 2017 for next year’s event.
